If you’re hoping to have a sandy Christmas instead of a white one, you just may get your wish in the coming months. However, beyond that, things will change drastically. Soon after the start of the new year, South Carolina will hop on this year’s Polar Coaster for a bit of a wild ride.

In true South Carolina form, the weather will change with practically the blink of an eye. One day you’ll be enjoying the spoils of nature in mild conditions that barely prompt the use of your cold weather outer wear.

And the next (especially in the inland areas), you may find yourself following a trusty SCDOT salt truck with a plow on the front. And THAT’S precisely why the Farmers’ Almanac predicts a wild ride on the Polar Coaster this winter.

Look for a dramatic start to the new year with above-average amounts of precipitation and plenty of opportunities for falling temps to turn it into snow. As those temps begin to rise again, the snow will turn to slush at the height of the day — and then to ice at night.

The worst of it should occur, according to the Farmers’ Almanac, between January 4th and 7th and again between January 12th and 15th. The followup may be a cold blast of Arctic air moving across the Southeast from Canada sometime in February.
