There are a lot of ways to experience the best of Maine’s fall foliage. There’s no denying that one of the best ways is to strap on some sturdy boots and get outside. Oftentimes simply taking a hike on a forest trail will reveal a beautiful array of colors. But, what about folks who aren’t looking to break a sweat just to see some scenic fall views? This walk is for those of us who prefer to take in the world around us in a more leisurely way.
There are a fair few covered bridges in Maine, but this one might be the most well-known. Strolling across it might be one of the best ways to appreciate autumn in Maine.

You’ll find the Sunday River Bridge near Newry, not far from the Sunday River Resort and Mountain. If it doesn’t sound familiar, that might be because you’ve heard it referred to by it’s more casual name of “Artist’s Bridge.”

It got the name “Artist’s Bridge” after being painted, drawn, photographed and otherwise memorialized in artistic renderings for as long as it’s been around. Once you visit and take in the beauty, you’ll understand why people want to recreate it in art.

The bridge dates back to 1872, making it one of Maine’s only 19th-century covered bridges that’s still standing.

Visiting the bridge is easy. You’ll find it off of Routes 2 and 26. And parking nearby is fairly smooth as well. Simply drive your car to the bridge and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The bridge measures about 100 feet long and 20 feet wide and features a gable roof with wooden shingles. As a testament to its beauty, it’s not uncommon to come across a wedding taking place right on the bridge.

The hike here will take you along the river and across the bridge, but we prefer to stroll across the bridge and enjoy the sights in a more relaxed way.
