Enjoying the outdoors in New Hampshire isn’t hard to do. There’s certainly no shortage of ways to see the sights. But when we can across this unique bridge we couldn’t resist including it in our roundup of things to do this autumn season. At 275-feet it’s long enough to make it feel like a true (mini!) adventure!
This landmark suspension bridge in Milford is often simply referred to as the “swing bridge.”

It was built in 1889 over the Souhegan River and helped mill workers get to and from their jobs.

It was originally constructed of wood back in 1850. The light construction allowed the bridge to move as the result of foot traffic. This is where its “swing” moniker originates.

In 1869 high water caused the original wooden bridge to be carried away. In its place the bridge we see today was constructed.

Bridge lovers will notice the Victorian Era details which. Any anyone will notice the height. It’s a whopping three stories tall at the ends!

The swing bridge is easy to walk across from downtown Milford.

You’ll find it between Pine Street and Souhegan Street, northeast of the downtown center. It can be found if you take Bridge Street directly to Pine Street.
