Luckily for North Dakotans, there is still one left – and it’s one of the last remaining, still-operating machines of its kind in the world. The Dakota Drug Co. seems like any other small-town drug store. With a typical pharmacy and shopping section, you may be surprised to find there is something else here that sets it apart.

Located inside the store among the aisles is an old fashioned soda fountain, known simply as The Fountain. It’s here that one of the last, still-operating Whirl-a-whip machines in the world still creates delicious ice cream treats.

If you don’t know what a Whirl-a-whip is, it is ice cream blended with your choice of mix-ins. Unlike fast-food joints with similar concepts that use soft serve, the Whirl-a-whip uses quality ice cream and blends it to a smooth consistency.

They have an immense list of mix-ins, from different types of well-loved cereal brands, candy, cookies, and fruits, to weirder things like bacon or even dill pickles.
