Sometimes, the best view comes from above! That’s certainly the case for many of Minnesota’s waterfalls, lakes, and even forests. Tall towers, riveting mountain gondola rides, and steep hikes make it easy to get a bird’s-eye view of Minnesota’s landscape. That’s the case for the Riverview Trail at John A. Latsch State Park. This steep hike climbs 592 steps to the top of Mount Charity. At the top, it offers a view so clear that you can see into Wisconsin. John A. Latsch State Park is a beautiful 1,600-acre park in southeastern Minnesota, about 10 miles north of Winona. It makes for a beautiful day trip any season of the year.

The park is right on the edge of the Mississippi River, so it offers plenty of beautiful views. You’ll never tire of watching the river as it makes its way south.

John A. Latsch State Park is also home to several tall bluffs that look over the river. One of these, Mount Charity, is home to a breathtaking trail that, if you’re up for it, is well worth the hike.

The Riverview Trail is made up of 592 steps from the base of Mount Charity to the top. It winds through the thick, lush forest surrounding the trail, full of migratory birds and other wildlife.

The trail, only 1/2-mile in length, takes most people about an hour to climb. There is a rest area with benches partway up the climb for those who need to catch their breath.

You’ll love the Riverview Trail in all seasons. Spring and summer are full of greenery, while fall brings gorgeous changing leaves. In the winter, the bare branches make it easier to see the sights in the distance.
