‘Tis the season of cozy days spent indoors, sipping on hot cocoa and watching movies on the Hallmark Channel. If you do end up binging a bunch of Christmas movies this season, be sure to keep an eye out for a familiar destination: our very own Nevada City. This charming little town got its first movie credit when a Hallmark original Christmas movie filmed here years ago. To this day, the town still celebrates this quirky fact and visitors can even visit many of the movie’s locations. This town is just as enchanting in real life as it is in the movie, so definitely be sure to visit this holiday season to feel like you’ve been transported to your own Christmas movie!
It may seem strange, but there’s a Hallmark Channel Christmas Movie that has won over many Northern Californians’ hearts. After all, it features our very own Nevada City along with many of its iconic destinations and residents.

The movie, called “The Christmas Card”, was released in December 2006. It tells the story of a soldier who receives a Christmas card from a stranger who lives in Nevada City. He then travels to the town in order to seek out the woman.

It may boast a typical Hallmark plot, but the best thing about “The Christmas Card” is the fact that it showcases all of the winter charm that Nevada City is known for. This close-knit town is definitely a beloved holiday destination for many, and it’s easy to see why.

As the holidays approach, Nevada City completely transforms. Lights are strung across storefronts, wreaths are hung on streetlights, and Christmas carolers roam the sidewalks. For this reason, the town became one of the movie’s most lovable characters.

The movie actually features several real Nevada City residents, along with a handful of iconic destinations in town. Places like the Nevada City Classic Cafe and the National Hotel can all be spotted throughout the film, and they come off as just as charming as they do in real life.

The Nevada City Methodist Church also played a significant role in the Christmas movie, and it still does in a way. The church actually secured the rights to screen the film for free so that it can have community showings during the holiday season. You may even sit next to one of the residents who makes an appearance in the film!
