Did you know that Wyoming is one of the most haunted states in the nation? With a wild history and dozens of abandoned towns, it’s not surprising to hear that there have been ghosts spotted throughout the Cowboy State. Read about a few of our favorite hauntings below.
- The Ghosts of Gebo
Flickr / David Cohen Gebo was one of the many boom towns built along the migrant trails for people hoping to settle into a better life. However, being out in the high prairie was a hard way to live, and many perished in the small town of Gebo before it was abandoned. - The Ghost Ship of the North Platte
Flickr / Amanda Steggell In 1862, travelers wrote about a ghost ship appearing on the North Platte River, rising from the mist and disappearing into the dark. The same site has been noted by other visitors to the area, although it is typically sighted only a couple of times every century. Seeing the ghost ship is supposed to indicate an imminent death.
- The Haunted Occidental Hotel
Flickr / Holly Hayes The Occidental Hotel has seen a whole lot of history over the years, but the resident spirit is said to be a woman who was staying on the top floor when the hotel was a brothel. She visits guests today in the rooms and in the saloon downstairs.
- The Dorm Built On A Graveyard
Flickr / MDV During the construction of Knight Hall, workers discovered several unmarked graves. The project was delayed until the bodies could be moved, but then carried on when the site was cleaned up. Now, students have to share their cramped rooms with spirits from the other side.
- Eerie Fort Laramie
Flickr / Randy Watson Wyoming’s very first trading post, Fort Laramie, is preserved as a historic site today. The fort was a safe haven for travelers out west, and many have continued to enjoy their hideout to this day. - Casper’s Friendly Ghost
Flickr / Eric Of course our lovely town of Casper has a friendly ghost! The Wonder Bar is home to spirits, and, well, spirits. Order a drink and listen to the bartenders tell tales of ghosts who haunt the patrons that visit this famous watering hole.
- The Spooky Ghost Town That’s Full Of Actual Ghosts
Flickr / David Cohen Kirwin was once a busy mining town, but when an avalanche killed off some workers, it was quickly abandoned. Paranormal investigators have spent time in Kirwin, documenting disembodied voices and other spooky noises on audio tape, as well as an odd floating object on film.
