Mainers can generally be considered happy folks. We live among some of the most beautiful landscapes, including coast and forest. And, we’re surrounded by friends and family who also appreciate life in Vacationland. But, while we tend to look on the bright side, there are a few things that get under our skin in a way we can’t quite explain. If you want to avoid getting on our bad side, try to avoid being around when any of these things happen.

  1. When people act like there’s nothing worth seeing above Bangor.

auvet / Flickr We happen to know this is true because you, our dear readers, will always remind us when we’ve spent a little too much time covering southern Maine. And, for good reason! There’s plenty to see throughout the state!

  1. Serve us a deliciously prepared lobster…with rubber bands on its claws.

subinev / Flickr This is not how lobster should be cooked. Which means there’s no reason that these bands should be on the claws on an actual plate. Leave the lobster serving to us, please.

  1. Or, give us a lobster roll dripping in mayo.

wallyg / Flickr Butter, please. Lots and lots of butter!

  1. Spring construction. What else is there to say about it?

dougtone / Flickr We know that the roads need to be repaired after the winters we experience. But, does it have to be every road throughout the entire season?

  1. Snow bans.

jlascar / Flickr It’s a part of life in the larger towns and cities here, but don’t we all have that moment when the idea of having to deal with our car makes us want to move?

  1. Knowing that work and school will go on.

sunlightrunes / Flickr Living in Maine you get used to the fact that life keeps on going despite snow. But, can’t we get just one snow day?

  1. There’s one exception to this, though! Raise your hand if you’ve ever been mad that the kids do have a snow day?

carlwwycoff / Flickr On days when it feels like the constant need for entertainment doesn’t end, it’d be nice if Maine schools could remember how prepared we are for snow and let them come in!

  1. Referring to a place like this as simply your “cabin.”

dana_moos / Flickr This, my friends, is a camp. It’s located on the shores of a lake, nestled in the trees or along the coast. And no matter how big or large it is, it’s always a camp.

  1. Being forced to drive through Massachusetts.

auvet / Flickr Or, really, be forced to drive in any state near a Massachusetts driver. It’s not fun. We’ll leave it at that.

  1. “It’s just a little traffic,” they say. But when it’s in the summer and it’s blocking the roads, it feels a lot bigger than a little bit of traffic.

Maine Memes / Facebook We love the fact that tourists appreciate our little corner of the world. But is there any way they would travel faster? Or maybe just use other streets?

  1. Realizing that we should have bought it when we saw it at Marden’s.

Maine Memes / Facebook That’s hose? Yep, need it now. The entire dining set that we couldn’t decide on? GONE NOW. Mainers, we all know the rules. Buy it when you see it at Marden’s!

  1. Tell us you’ll only visit in the summer because it’s too cold.

chcarver / Flickr Listen. We get that it’s cold in the winter. But we get quite a few months of lovely weather that’s not actually just the summer. Stop acting like Maine is the great white north. It’s great here!

  1. It’s just one word, but when it’s pronounced as if it rhymes with the month of May, we just can’t contain ourselves.

Maine Memes / Facebook You may not travel there very often but if you do, be sure to remember that it sounds just like the thing you get on your hands from working too hard.

  1. Post photos of your sunny tropical life.

kbl_luccia / Flickr We get it. It’s warm wherever you are. It’s cold where we are. Let’s just move on.

If you find yourself in a foul mood this season, we have a remedy! Check out Gardens Aglow at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Even the Grinch would have a hard time feeling grumpy there!
