Iowa is a relatively peaceful state, and it’s one of the safest places to live in the entire country. That doesn’t mean we are without a gruesome past, though. Back in 1910, one small town was the site of the most horrifying Iowa crime when a vagrant broke into a home and murdered the occupants. The house is now considered one of the most haunted spots in the entire state.

Did you know that you can tour one of Iowa’s most infamous true crime scenes?

The small farmhouse was the site of a gruesome killing, back in 1910. On the evening of June 10th, someone broke into the Moore house and murdered the entire family, plus two visiting guests. When the neighbors awoke, they were rattled by a crime that devastated the whole town.

The killer was never brought to justice, and despite multiple trials and arrests, the man who killed the Moores was never found.

Today, you can visit the Villisca Axe Murder House, as it was restored when a historian purchased it in the 1990s.
