Not many people know that North Dakota has a waterfall. Most assume the stereotype that the state being totally flat is true – and how could a flat state have a waterfall? This isn’t at all the case, and although there is only one, ND does have a waterfall. This secret waterfall is deep in one of the state’s forests (disproving another stereotype – that there are no trees here) and there’s a beautiful, picturesque trail you can take to find it.
To find North Dakota’s one and only secret waterfall, you’ll have to get your hiking boots on for this picturesque trail. The trail is about 4.3 miles long and is part of the North Country Scenic Trail.

The trail is perfect for anyone of any skill level. It will take you through the Sheyenne State Forest near Fort Ransom, North Dakota. Bring your camera as there are many gorgeous spots for photo ops.

People especially love visiting this place in the fall, as the lush green of the forest turns into beautiful shades of gold and red. You can visit the trail any time of the year, even in winter, and see all the beautiful nature preserved here.

The trail also features a historic bridge at the trailhead as an added bonus and another reason to visit. There are informative signs that will tell you all about the area and why it is so special.

At the end of the trail, you’ll find the Mineral Springs falls. This is the state’s only natural waterfall and flows constantly from an underground spring.

Though it may not be huge and towering, the trickling of the water and the sun-dappled forest make a serene, lovely little spot where you can take in the natural surroundings and just enjoy this little slice of North Dakota beauty.
