It’s believed that the carvings belong to the Western Shoshone. They were the only indigenous people to occupy this region of northern Nevada until Europeans arrived in the mid-1800s. At their core, the carvings prove that this area was an active hunting and dwelling site for thousands of years.

An easy self-guided hiking trail leads visitors through Hickison Recreation Area and to the panels of rock carvings. At just a half-mile long, it’s suitable for hikers of all skill levels and ages. Just keep in mind that the site is protected by federal law against damage or defacement, and hikers should stay on the trail at all times.
