The leaves are still on the trees and the temperatures are still warm enough to make a hike sound like fun. But, the inevitable winter is on its way. This time of year we’re usually preparing ourselves for it. But, somehow seeing what’s happening at the top of Mt. Washington has us wanting to bundle up and don an extra sweater.

Mount Washington State Park is a great place to visit in the summer. With some of the best hikes in the state, it’s an outdoor-lovers paradise. But, things sure do change in just a few short weeks!

While conditions down at sea level feel a lot more like the autumn we love in New Hampshire, things on Mount Washington have been quite different.

Winds have reached above 125 m.p.h. and the summit saw at least two days with 100+ winds!

This often leads to rime ice feathers and in this case they’re already up to 3 feet in some areas.

This might seem absolutely unexpected, but in reality it’s totally normal for the summit of Mount Washington.

In fact, the average snowfall for October is about 17"!

You won’t be able to see this in-person as the summit is now closed for the season, but be sure to follow them on Facebook to see what’s happening up there!
