North Dakota has some truly stunning landscapes. Places that people who think the state is nothing but flat fields are totally missing out on. The painted canyons of the west are one of those, and everyone should experience them at least once. Luckily, there is an awesome trail that will take you right down into the canyons in one of the most scenic spots. Not only that, but it’s easily accessible right off the interstate and free to experience. Take a look:
Visit the Painted Canyon Overlook just off of I-94 near Medora, North Dakota for beautiful views and a great trail. You can park at the visitor’s center and go from there.

The overlook is a peek into the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The colorful layers of the buttes and canyons are like something from another world. The view from the overlook itself is already gorgeous, but you’ll definitely want to hit the trail to get the full experience.

The trail starts right at the overlook and goes down into the canyons. It’s approximately 2 miles long and is worth the journey.

You’ll head down through the prairie grasses and trees and experience the unique landscape up close and personal. You may even see some wildlife on the way.

The trail does have multiple sets of stairs, some of which are a bit steep. It is a good idea to bring a water bottle or two with you on the trek.

While you’re exploring the gullies and ridges, be prepared to come across some wildlife. Bison are frequent visitors to this area as well as wild horses, prairie dogs, coyotes, and more.

The Painted Canyon Overlook is open year-round, however, the visitors center is seasonal and may not be open. You can still enjoy the view and trail regardless. It is just off of 1-94. Theodore Roosevelt National Park may have beautiful canyons, but it isn’t the only place in North Dakota. The Pembina Gorge is another awesome spot with great trails and gorgeous scenery.
