Many years ago, general stores were quite popular in rural Alabama. In fact, several are still in business today. For those that aren’t in business, many have been well preserved and allow visitors. One of these general stores is the Grant Store, which you can learn all about below.
The Grant Store is located in Ward, Alabama - a small unincorporated community in Sumter County. It’s one of the state’s finest preserved general stores.

Built in 1924 by T.L.S. Grant, this general store was an important fixture in the community during the early and mid 1900s.

Its primary purpose, like all general stores, was to have important everyday items available for people living in the community. A few examples of these items include food staples, clothing, ailment remedies, farming tools, and so much more.

The moment you step inside the Grant Store, you’ll be reminded of yesteryear. In fact, many of the items on display were actually there when the store closed.

You’ll also notice several pieces of old farm equipment on the outside of the store, in addition to pieces of a large petrified tree that was dug up nearby.

Interestingly, the general store also had a post office up front and a doctor’s office in the back. It was a store that offered a little bit of everything.
