Fast food is as ubiquitous in America as cars and houses. For better or worse, it’s become a staple in some American diets and there’s not a lot of reason to believe it’s going away any time soon. You might not like the giant golden arches visible from every major highway in the country, but would you believe us if we told you that some are actually hard to spot? This one in Freeport looks just like a regular house, which feels very Maine to us!
Most people in search of a Big Mac and fries will be looking for something like this at the side of the road.

But, things work a little differently in Maine. Instead of a garish red and gold logo, you’re going to want to keep your eyes open for an adorable colonial home if you’re hungry in Freeport.

The original home was built by William Gore, a prominent merchant in the Freeport area. It was turned into the town’s only McDonald’s in 1984.

All local buildings must conform to a local “look,” which meant that adding the fast food joint would have to come with some brand changes. Among them was the keeping the character of the outside of the home as well as inside.

And, as with many regional McDonald’s you might even find some local menu specialties like a lobster roll! Many people say it’s just as good, if not better, than some found at the seaside shacks.

They’re open every day from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. There’s no local website, but you can give them a call on 207-865-9566 if you have questions that just can’t wait. You might also want to try making a reservation when you call. They won’t take it, but it might be funny to see what they say!
