The Cathedral of St. Joseph is located in downtown Wheeling on the corner of Eoff and 13th Streets.

One of the largest churches in the state, its size is probably one of the first things passersby notice. Beautiful stonework is another feature that’s sure to catch the eye.

But the cathedral’s exterior is nothing compared to the stunningly colorful interior, which is described as Mediaeval Byzantine style.

Built between 1923 and 1926, it’s modeled after several churches throughout Italy, resulting in an incredible architectural wonder.

One of the cathedral’s most notable features is its dome. Inspired by the dome in the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, it’s adorned with an eye-catching, hand painted mural.

The dome isn’t the only place you’ll find impressive pieces of artwork, though. Detailed paintings of biblical figures and religious scenes are plastered all over the cathedral.
