With approximately 750 miles of coastline, one might be surprised to learn that Hawaii is fourth in terms of states with the longest coastlines, behind Alaska, Florida, and California. But where we lack in terms of coastal miles, we more than make up for with a plethora of stunning, secret spots along the coast – from tide pools and beautiful beaches to geological formations carved from ancient lava flows. This little-known state recreation pier is one of the most unique coastal secrets in Hawaii and you’re going to want to add this spot to your island bucket list.
Situated at the mouth of the Hanamaulu Stream on the southeastern shore of Kauai near the Lihue International Airport is one of Hawaii’s most overlooked state parks.

This cement pier outfitted with a wooden walkway was once the endpoint for the Ahukini Terminal and Railway Company, which operated the railway that ran along Kauai’s coconut coast beginning in Anahola, Hawaii.

Though the pier has long been abandoned by the railway, today, it is an excellent place for both pole fishing and crab netting.

Fishermen should note that the bay is a State Fishery Management Area and thus, strict regulations on spearfishing and net fishing apply to the area.

The pier also offers the opportunity for taking in the breathtaking scenery of Hanama’ulu Bay. You won’t want to forget your camera!
