The Lake Calavera Loop Trail is ranked as moderate, so it’s ideal for those who have some experience hiking. There is an incline on the trail, so come prepared with sturdy shoes and plenty of water as you’ll need both on this hike.

Just shy of 5 miles (4.8, to be exact), this trail will give you a nice workout in the great outdoors. It is a loop trail, so you can make this hike as long or as short as you’d like.

Perhaps one of the most fascinating things about this trail is that it’s at the site of a former volcano. It’s now dormant, but you can still see evidence of its volcanic past.

For example, as you view the mountain along the trail you can see the volcanic plugs and lava columns that still remain. It’s fascinating!

You can even walk along the top of the former lava columns for an added adventure. It also makes for a great photo opportunity, but be careful as there is quite a steep drop from the edge.

The best time of year to experience the Lake Calavera Loop Trail is from September to June – so now is the perfect time to enjoy this hike! Show up during the fall season and you’ll be treated to the changing colors of the leaves on the trees.
