Mainers are no stranger to frighteningly dramatic winter weather. After all, we do have the some of the coldest temps to be recorded in New England. Most winters here bring snow, rain, ice and chilly temps and some of us have come to appreciate that. It means lots of fun outdoor winter activities. But despite knowing what to expect, we always enjoy waiting for the Farmers’ Almanac to release their forecast and this year, it’s a doozy. Get ready for a wild ride!
As Mainers, we’re used to winters that feel cold. Warm days are a bit of a treat here during the winter. But this year’s winter season is expected to bring it all. Known as the “polar coaster” winter, this season might be like nothing we’ve ever seen.

The Farmers’ Almanac editor, Peter Geiger, said it best! “This winter is going to be full of thrills and chills.” He goes on to say, “it’s going to be a long ride on the Polar Coaster.”

So what should we be ready for this year in Maine?

Sounds like we’ll have some warmer days when going outside will feel crisp, but lovely and refreshing. These will be great days for hikes and outside walks.

But we’ll also be experiencing some colder than normal temperatures. And this winter we’ll also be seeing significant precipitation.

Early January is expected to bring lots of snow, while late January will be marked by temperatures dipping far below zero in the northeast. And that’s going to last into February.

The Almanac is telling us that this back-and-forth weather will go on into April so it’s going to be a wild ride. Just like the “polar coaster” name indicates.
