When people think of the most gorgeous churches in the world, places like Italy, Spain, and France often come to mind, but did you know that Colorado is also home to one that is not only gorgeous but downright incredible? If you answered no, you will want to clear your weekend schedule and visit Colorado’s stunning Saint Catherine of Siena Chapel:
Located near Allenspark, the Saint Catherine of Siena Chapel is arguably one of Colorado’s most awe-inspiring pieces of architecture that has to be seen to be truly appreciated.

Nicknamed the “Chapel on the Rock,” Saint Catherine of Siena is perched upon a - you guessed it - rock formation, and is constructed of matching stone and brick.

Inspired by the Bible verse, “upon this rock I will build my church,” Saint Catherine’s was initially envisioned in 1916 and finally completed in 1936 due to both funding and construction issues.

Since its opening, hundreds of thousands have made a trip to see this architectural marvel, including Pope John Paul II, who prayed at and blessed the Chapel during the 1993 World Youth Day and also hiked around the area.

In addition to both the architecture and Pope John Paul II’s landmark visit, the Chapel on the Rock is also unique in that it was designated a Boulder County historic site.

Sadly, in 2011, tragedy struck the campus, as a fire destroyed retreat center, followed by unprecedented flooding and mudslides in 2013, which destroyed much of the remaining property.

While much of the property is still closed, the Saint Catherine of Siena Chapel is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with mass every Tuesday at 11:45 a.m.
