North Dakota’s badlands are a true sight to behold and something everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. Starting off, you’ll be visiting the North Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Watford City, North Dakota.

This gorgeous area has the tell-tale painted canyons, rugged landscape, and plenty of unique geological formations to explore. Check out the overlooks within the park for the best views.

Next, swing over to the east a little ways to visit the Little Missouri State Park.

This breathtaking state park has stunning sights of the classic badlands landscape and fantastic trails for hikers and horseback riding.

After that, head south to the fun old west town of Medora, North Dakota and the South Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

The town is a great place to stop for lunch and it connects to an amazing part of the TRNP. You can see lots of wildlife here along with the natural land.

After that, go just a bit south of Medora to the Sully Creek State Park.

This smaller state park is located in the valleys of the buttes along the Little Missouri River. Here you can see plenty of wildlife and enjoy the views.

Lastly, you can take an extra part of the drive even further south to the small town of Amidon, where you can find the aptly named White Butte just outside of it.

A trail leading up White Butte will take you to the highest point in North Dakota, at an elevation of 3506 feet above sea level.
