Kansas, full of flat land and rolling hills, doesn’t have a lot of landscape that leads to natural tunnels of any sort. We have quite a few caves here and there, but not many natural tunnels to speak of. This Kansas natural tunnel is a mystery to many, but we think everyone should see this wonderful spot.

Welcome to Elk River Hiking Trail, a long and beautiful hike near Elk City Lake and a great place to experience some of our most beautiful scenery.

The trail sits at 14.1 miles and is a little tough for people who aren’t used to hiking on rocky surfaces and inclines. It’s rated as moderate, so make sure to bring your walking stick and your good hiking boots.

Much of the trail is through forested areas, rock faces, and plenty of landscape changes. You’ll want to make sure you’ve got plenty of time to complete the trail — we’ve heard an early start and plenty of food and water is your best bet!

But the best part of the trail is this wonderful natural creation — a tunnel made of rock on all sides. It’s a little natural wonder hidden away on this long trail, but it’s well worth the mileage.

In addition to the beautiful rock faces and tunnel, you’ll also find a little waterfall! It’s a two-for-one deal on this trail.

Once you reach the high point of the trail, you’ll find this scenic overlook where you can see over Elk City Lake and feel on top of the world. As far as Kansas goes, that is.

You can use this trail year-round, but it’s best without mud or ice. You may also bring your dog, as long as it’s on a leash. If you fall in love with the area, there are also primitive campsites located along the trail.
