The original mall was slow to attract customers. But eventually, a fashionable hat shop opened next door, which drew wealthy customers to the area. Before long, the mall was a popular place to shop.

The Arcade was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
