Few people know that a mere five miles north of Georgetown sits a property that is said to be the most well preserved (former) rice plantation in America. Begun in 1718, Mansfield Plantation is also the only rice plantation in the U.S. that’s been saved from development by a direct descendant of the original owner. It currently serves as a bed and breakfast, the likes of which you just won’t find anywhere else. Period.

But if history isn’t enough to draw you to Mansfield, then everything else will do the trick — especially if you love everything about southern plantations.

The adventure at Mansfield Plantation actually begins the moment you turn off Highway 701 just north of Georgetown.

Facebook/Mansfield Plantation Bed & Breakfast You’ll meander through a beautiful lowland forest on a sandy dirt road for more than a mile and pass the remains of the former slave village, complete with church and cabins, before arriving at the entrance gates for the plantation.

Those masonry gates are said to be original to the plantation, which means they could be as old as 301 years.

Mansfield Plantation offers eight delightful guest rooms, all with their own exterior entrance and guest baths.
