DC has quite a few gorgeous churches. However the two big ones, the National Cathedral and Basilica seem to get most of the attention and visitors. But we found a church that doesn’t always make on the must-see lists but really should because it’s absolutely gorgeous. St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral is the most beautiful church in DC!
St. Nicholas Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox Church located in Northwest DC.

The parish was founded in 1930 and the property for the church was purchased in 1951. The building was completed in 1963.

The architecture for the cathedral was based on a 12 century cathedral in Russia.

In the 1990s, the parish decided to complete the interior of the cathedral with iconic wall paintings.

Today, almost every inch of the church is covered in beautiful paintings and colors.

And the paintings don’t stop at eye level. They cover all the way up the walls and onto the ceilings above.

You don’t have to practice religion to visit St. Nicholas Cathedral and you don’t even have to attend a service to see it.

The cathedral is at 3500 Massachusetts Ave NW at the corner of Edmund Street, in the District of Columbia. It is a beautiful hidden gem in DC that is worth the visit.
