South Dakota is chock-full of both ghost towns and super tiny towns, but many of them do not change come Christmas time or even acknowledge this joyful time of the year. While this is the norm for most of these smaller (or downright deserted) communities, there is one that stands out as being magical this Christmas season: the surprisingly festive town of Nora.

Located in Union County, Nora was always a small town but is now home to an estimated five residents and the old Nora Store.

Closed in 1962, the Nora Store is an old country shop that once served as the community’s go-to for necessities and is now the best place in South Dakota for caroling and Christmas spirit!

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Nora Store is a Mount Rushmore State favorite that brings in carolers from both near and far, who are lead on a fully-restored organ by Nora resident Mike Pederson, who began the tradition in 1989.

In addition to the music and unbeatable Christmas cheer, guests of the Nora Store can also enjoy homemade cookies and either cider or coffee!

Caroling at the Nora Store is free to the public, but donations - which are put toward the upkeep of the store - are much appreciated.
