Adherence to culture, and tradition has important relevance for many native South Carolinians. A number of restaurants and general stores in South Carolina have long histories of serving the families within the communities they serve, and we love stepping back in time by visiting those that remind us of the past. In 1926, the Barnwell family opened an Esso station and mercantile enroute to Edisto from Charleston. By all accounts, it was the hub of the community for many decades but, in 1983, the time-honored building caught on fire.

For years the property was empty, then it was revived by a local fisherman and turned into a restaurant.

And in 2018, it was opened once again by the Barnwell family and Roxbury Mercantile, once a general store, is now a restaurant filled with history, delicious southern fare, and plenty of good vibes.

Entrees include an option to order a platter with one, two, or three choices. The choices are also available individually on the menu and include pulled pork, chicken, shrimp, ribs, scallops, oysters, and fish. Or, opt for the Frogmore Stew (a.k.a. Lowcountry Boil).
