Do you love a good bargain? If so, then you’re probably familiar with the Goodwill stores throughout New England. But did you know that one of the stores here in Maine sells everything by the pound? You can get some killer deals if you don’t mind sifting through huge bins of second-hand treasures! Check out the Goodwill Buy the Pound Store & Recycling Center:

This huge Goodwill location looks like a warehouse, and that’s because it is. It’s not a typical thrift store, with organized racks and fitting rooms. It’s a warehouse full of bins…and potential treasures.

Goodwill calls this “Extreme Thrifting,” and that’s pretty accurate. This place is unlike any other thrift store in the state.

There are 20 huge, plastic bins on wheels. Every 45 minutes, employees remove half of the bins and bring new ones in.

Make no mistake: shopping this way is a lot of work. You’ll have to sift through the bins to find the treasures inside. Everything here started at one of the retail locations, but didn’t sell during a five-week period. Then it was sent here and sorted by category into these huge bins.

During your shopping experience, you’ll wait behind the red lines painted on the floor until all the bins are in place. Then, as soon as you get the go-ahead, you’ll race forward and start sifting.

The search is part of the fun! You’ll find a lot of junk, but you’ll also find some real treasures. Everything is sold by the pound, which means that the shirt you just found might cost as little as 30 cents!
