There’s nothing like going for a nice, long scenic drive here in Idaho. Our state is full of scenic roads that are perfect for cruising down and taking in the view. However, some times you find yourself in the mood to tackle something a little more exciting. That’s where the Old Spiral Highway in Lewiston comes in. This historic road is often cited as Idaho’s windiest road, and it’s easy to see why. With over 60 curves and a steadily steep elevation grade, this road is for drivers who are up for a bit of a challenge.

Located in Lewiston, the Old Spiral Highway is noted as one of the twistiest roads in all of Idaho. At only 7.3 miles long, the drive is short. However, you’re about to find that it definitely packs a punch.

Also referred to as “the Old Lewiston Grade”, the road was originally constructed in 1917. The road is somewhat of an iconic landmark in the town of Lewiston. It was even the subject of the 1950s rock n’ roll song called “Hot Rod Lincoln”.

The highway was constructed at a time when automobiles were taking over and wagons were quickly becoming outdated. It was considered a huge feat in engineering at the time and a breakthrough in early highway construction.

At less than 10 miles long, the road makes for a great Sunday drive. It’s short, curvy, and smooth riding. However, it’s best attempted by those who don’t get dizzy very easily. The road boasts an impressive 64 curves while traversing 2,000 feet in elevation.

The highway is especially beloved among motorcyclists. It’s considered to be one of the best biking roads in Idaho for its scenery and smooth asphalt.

The road links up with US-95 at the top of Lewiston Hill and offers a straight journey as you make the descent down the east side of the hill.
