Oheka Castle/TripAdvisor First built by a man named Otta Hermann Kahn (where the name O-HE-KA came from), the castle is the second largest private residence ever to be built in the United States. During the 1920s the castle served as Kahn’s summer vacation getaway, using the extravagant estate to host unforgettable parties.

Sadly, after Kahn’s death in 1934 the castle would long go unappreciated. For thirty years the castle served as a military academy, destroying the gardens and wrecking much of the property’s original beauty with the turnover. Eventually the academy would go bankrupt, resulting in Oheka’s true demise when the castle would become abandoned and turn into a favorite victim of vandals.

Finally in the early 1980s, Oheka would find itself a new owner that would bring the castle back to life.

After being set on fire and left abandoned for so many years, the castle was in need of some serious “TLC”. Hundreds of windows and doors had to be replaced along with the fact that the entire garden needed to be constructed once again.

Now considered to be the largest restoration in our country’s history, roughly 30 million dollars were put into Oheka.
