I grew up going to Fairytale Forest, a whimsical New Jersey theme park that delighted generations. First opened in 1957, family after family came to enjoy the postcard-perfect play area, inspired by the storybooks we all know and love. Visitors could find Hansel and Gretel’s house, Rapunzel’s tower, Humpty Dumpty’s wall, and other spectacular scenes, along with a variety of rides. Sadly, the park closed in 2005.
Over the years, the site served as a storage facility (which still takes up a portion of the park), BBQ restaurant (Hot Diggity Dog, now closed), and more. Many visited the abandoned attraction, some to take photos, others to vandalize. However, the property has always been cared for to some extent by its owners. In 2015, the decision was made to reopen. There’s a new vision for the park, one I look forward to exploring.
Here’s what you can expect…
Facebook/Fairytale Forest Many of the buildings and structures will be renovated. The area will be more adult oriented, but still wholesome. A restaurant will be at the center of it all! Fables will serve fun, fabulous food at modest prices. According to their website, Fables will offer New American cuisine, ice cream, organic juice, and more. It sounds like a magical mix. We can’t wait to see what culinary creations Chef Christine Nunn will bring to the table. Fables is set to open in the late summer or early fall months…stay posted.
I’m excited to get photos of the all new Fairytale Forest but in the meantime, I’ll reminisce. The nostalgia is strong with this incredible video shot on-site by Antiquity Echoes in 2011.
