The Mighty Mississippi is truly an incredible sight. And one of the best places to view the river is Natchez. Perched high on a bluff, the city offers expansive vistas of the famous waterway. In recent years, those views have gotten even easier to take in thanks to the Bridge of Sighs. Take a look:
Built in 2015, the Bridge of Sighs is a pedestrian bridge that stretches over Roth’s Hill Road in Natchez. Even though it’s rather new, it’s got some history – it’s a replica of a 19th century bridge that used to span Roth’s Hill Road.

The historic roots don’t end there, though. The bridge is named after an ancient bridge in Venice, Italy.

But the name isn’t the bridge’s only link to Europe. For some time, visitors were placing padlocks on the bridge – a tradition that’s popular in various European countries.

However, don’t get any ideas about placing your own padlock on the bridge. City officials removed the locks because they were worried about the extra weight they added to the bridge.

The Bridge of Sighs is actually part of the Natchez Bluff Trail, which follows a path on top of the famous Natchez Bluff.

The trail then descends a 200’ staircase, bringing you to the base of the bluff.

Recreational and educational, the trail features several interpretive panels, which tell the history of Natchez.
