While Michigan’s roads might not always be pretty (we’re looking at you, potholes), a recent study suggests that Michiganders are adept at navigating the state’s less-than-ideal street conditions. That’s right: a new report from QuoteWizard Insurance News provides insight into the cities that house America’s best and worst drivers, and two Michigan locales made the top five.

According to QuoteWizard, citizens of Detroit and Grand Rapids rank among America’s best drivers. Detroit snagged the top spot, while Grand Rapids came in at number five.

This might come as a surprise to Michiganders who frequently find themselves frustrated by driving conditions and fellow drivers – but the data tells a different story.

In compiling its list of top drivers, QuoteWizard considered several factors: accidents, speeding tickets, DUI charges, and citations like using cell phones or speeding.

They don’t call Detroit the Motor City for nothing. Michigan’s largest city earned high marks in most of these categories, though its DUI statistics were less than perfect.

Grand Rapids also performed well in the study, with fewer incidents to speak of than many of America’s cities. Michigan did not appear anywhere on the “worst drivers” list.”

It is, however, important to note that QuoteWizard’s study solely considered insured drivers. The company was quick to point out that many Michigan drivers are uninsured.

While confounding variables certainly exist, we Michiganders should surely take pride in our abilities. After all, our experience navigating potholes is unmatched.

Michigan drivers are well-versed in icy roads and construction zones, so a small dose of positive driving-related news is undoubtedly healthy for state spirit.
