Marysville is actually home to a population of all-black squirrels, about 1/5 of the local squirrel population appearing with this unique melanistic coloration.

It’s thought that they originated after being let out of a cage from a McMahon Carnival coming through one night, and since then, they have lived and bred with local squirrels to slowly turn into the larger population they have today.

They’ve completely embraced the black squirrels, going far enough to commission painted statues of all sorts to display around town.
