Looking Glass Rock Is An Amazing Geological Wonder In North Carolina

Nothing beats a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. You’re suspended within the rugged mountain terrain, cruising high above sea level and treated to beautiful views throughout your journey. Yet, sometimes you might see something that catches your eye. For one, when you reach the Looking Glass Rock Overlook, you might be equal parts amazed and slightly confused to see a giant, dome-rock formation in the middle of tree-covered mountains.

Looking Glass Rock is situated at 3,790 feet above sea level and positioned south of Mount Pisgah and near Graveyard Fields.

It is referred to as a ‘pluton monolith’ and was formed some 300 million years ago. If it hadn’t cooled before reaching the earth’s surface, today, it would be a volcano.

The name ‘Looking Glass Rock’ derives from the fact that the granite face reflects the sunshine (and frozen ice) like a mirror.

While many see Looking Glass Rock as an unattainable destination off in the distance, it’s open to more than just rock climbers. If you drive to the Looking Glass Rock side of Brevard, you’ll encounter Looking Glass Rock Trail located off the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway.

The trail ascends 1,700 feet in just three miles (a 6.5 mile, roundtrip hike). The many switchbacks give it a moderately difficult status but even the somewhat seasoned hiker can make it to the top and take in these breathtaking views in around two hours. It’s perfect for a late spring hike as sections of the trail lead you through rhododendron and mountain laurel tunnels. At the top you’re treated to panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the mountains of Transylvania County.

While many prefer to view Looking Glass Rock from afar, this geographical marvel is available to experience firsthand. A fun fact: the flat slab on top can also be used as a helipad. With such a wonder in our own state, it makes for a perfect spring and summer hike. Just don’t forget your camera! If you prefer to view it from the Parkway, you’ll find it at milepost 417.
