Warm weather hangs around in Texas longer than most states, which is both a blessing and curse. At Lake Mackenzie near Amarillo, the latter is definitely more true. This pristine reservoir is hiding in a place where few would expect to find it and looks like something out of a fairytale. Be warned: you’ll want to start planning a trip after taking just one look.

Located between the remote North Texas towns of Silverton and Tulia, Lake Mackenzie was created by our state legislature way back in 1965. Its initial function was supplying water to those aforementioned communities plus Floydada and Lockney.

It wasn’t until 1976 that Lake Mackenzie opened for recreational purposes. With a motto of “Life just seems better at the lake,” this pristine body of water promises to deliver an unforgettable time.

Lake Mackenzie has earned itself a deserving spot on the list of Texas Historic Places. Its past and present are equally rich, with unique rock formations and abundant wildlife turning the basin into an exotic paradise.

As if the reservoir wasn’t remote enough already, towering cliffs on all sides further shield it from discovery. Sparse greenery dots the canyon peaks, but aridity is pervasive across the area - this renders the lake a welcome respite from the oppressive heat.

Opportunities for fun are endless, including boating, hiking, and riding ATV trails. Both cabins and RV plots accommodate overnight campers.

Fishing is also a popular activity for all ages. This little boy snagged a five pound bass, and there are plenty of bigger catches just waiting to be reeled in.

We’d be remiss not to mention the breathtaking beauty of a Texas lake sunset. No matter the season, an eruption of color spanning the entire rainbow blankets the sky in an awe-inspiring way.
