When we think about Georgia’s history, it’s hard not to think about the Civil War. Georgia has a lot of stories tied up with this critical time in our country’s history. In fact, one of the most important battles of the entire war was fought right here in Georgia. While you may have heard about the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, you might not know this history behind the mountain forest trail located nearby.
Most people visit Kennesaw Mountain to snag a glimpse of the battlefield that still holds so much history for the state of Georgia.

But little do they know, a nearby set of forest trails also holds a forgotten history of the Civil War.

The Union General William T. Sherman launched a major attack on Confederate General Joseph Johnson’s army at this spot in 1864.

Starting in early May, Sherman began a very slow advance 100-miles down from Chattanooga to Atlanta.

Eventually there were many smaller battles and skirmishes, ultimately leading to Johnson loosing ground, that led up to the final battle.

Sherman ended up switching tactics and began to surround the Confederate center at Kennesaw Mountain.

Attacking uphill on the mountain was no small feat, and eventually three thousand Union troops fell, compared to the 500 Confederates.

Today, while visiting the battlefield is still a history lover’s dream, you can actually take the 11-mile Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Trail loop, which takes you across two mountains and historical battlefields and the steps that each side took during this important battle.

While this isn’t a simple hike by any means, it is still one that can be enjoyed from morning to afternoon, getting pockets of long forgotten history in Georgia that still ring important.
