Stranger Things is an immensely popular science fiction show with a massive fan following. Set in the 1980s, the show is centered around a teenage girl with some pretty impressive powers and her ragtag group of friends. They save the world from mythical monsters and still manage to navigate the perils of junior high school. It’s not the easiest thing to explain but the show is pretty great, so it’s no surprise that a local New Jersey theater group is taking it on in their newest production.
The Saddle River Youth Theatre/Riverstage is a Bergen County theatre group that has produced over 300 musicals and plays with children and adults alike year-round for over 20 years. It just so happens that many of their cast members are Stranger Things fans!
Lowtrucks/Wikipedia They’ve been putting on haunted events for over a decade at the historic John Fell House estate in Allendale. Every year, they write a different theme. This year’s theme is Stranger Things! The production (Stranger Things: Escape!) is a work of fan fiction, inspired by the show.
But this isn’t your average show…it’s an immersive walking play.
Fell House/Facebook The experience begins at Archer Hall in Allendale (where you’ll check in) and concludes at the John Fell estate, which dates back to the 1760s. There are a variety of buildings including the barn (pictured) and mansion, which participants will explore.
A fully interactive experience, the walking play caters to small groups in order to provide a safe, intimate show.
Saddle River Youth Theater/Facebook Tour groups of fifteen or fewer are led by a guide throughout the property, moving and stopping at different locales in the house and around the grounds to watch (sometimes scary) scenes unfold right in front of their eyes. While suitable for most older children, much of the show will be in the dark and there will be several jump out scares.
The audience helps to propel the story forward by performing tasks (like singing a song) or handing an important prop to a character (Christmas lights, for example).
Saddle River Youth Theater/Facebook The show lasts one hour and requires participants to be able to complete a 7-minute lantern lit walk, and climb stairs in the John Fell House. Comfortable shoes are recommended. Will you avoid the demogorgon’s wrath? Will you end up in the Upside Down? You’ll have to get tickets to find out.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors (65 and older). There are several showings available: October 18, 19, 25, and 26 at 6, 7, 8, and 9 pm. You can purchase tickets online here. We love the interactive elements of this moving play and we love that it supports a good cause – 100% of the proceeds go to the Linda Milcos Scholarship Fund.
