Most of us have used, or use on a regular basis, the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Despite the constantly increasing rates to drive on the toll road that stretches from one side of the state to the other, it’s often the most convenient way to travel. Did you know, however, that there’s a 13-mile stretch of abandoned turnpike, bypassed in the 1960s, that features two tunnels? Today, you can hike along that stretch of abandoned turnpike in Pennsylvania and pass through two tunnels, too.
Expect a mishmash of unmaintained terrain when you hike along the 8.5-mile stretch of the abandoned PA Turnpike that spans from Breezewood to Waterfall.

Although not an official trial, the stretch of abandoned turnpike is popular with hikers and bikers. Because the area is not maintained, wear sturdy and comfortable hiking boots or shoes.

The picturesque trail winds through two of three abandoned tunnels – Rays Hill Tunnel and Sideling Hill Tunnel – so you’ll want to bring a flashlight along.

Meander along the abandoned turnpike, where much of the pavement is now hidden by overgrown grass and weeds. The trail is dotted with plenty of lush green, too, that transforms into vivid colors during the autumn.

Whether you’re walking or biking, pay attention to the ground as some areas are overgrown while others may be littered with broken glass and debris. (This is particularly relevant in the tunnels.)

Use a flashlight when traveling through the abandoned tunnels, which are rife with graffiti. If you’re bringing the kiddos along, be forewarned some of the graffiti may contain profanity.
