From breathtaking colored sand to beaches with crystalline turquoise waters, and from shores littered with tourists to those where you might be completely secluded, the Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the greatest beaches in the world. And while most of these beaches are easily accessible — with parking lots just steps from the sand — there are others that require a bit more effort, like this Kauai gem that is accessible only via a short and sweet hiking trail.
Tucked away at the foot of a large ocean bluff known as Kaweonui Point on Kauai’s northern shore near Princeville, Kaweonui Beach, more commonly referred to as Sealodge Beach, is an absolute dream.

Measuring in at less than a mile is this trail that leads hikers on a short, 10 to 15-minute adventure from the Sealodge Condos — from which the trail is named after — to the beach.

The trail is steep, rocky, and narrow. It’s slippery when wet, and some people might like to have bug repellant during the short trek.

Surrounded by lush greenery, this rugged spot is approximately 100 yards wide and perfect for enjoying a picnic, diving into a great book, soaking up the sun, or taking a nap. It’s also an excellent beach for collecting small seashells.

Depending on when you visit, you might just have this off-the-beaten-path beach all to yourself. On a busy day, you might find a dozen people here, but that’s rare. If this isn’t what you imagine when you think of paradise, I’m not sure what is.

Though this beach is littered with rugged lava rocks and is not suitable for swimming, it can be an excellent snorkeling destination — when the tide is high and the waves are calm, that is. The beach is protected from large waves by a large and broad reef that extends some 200 yards into the ocean, and you’ll find Hawaiian green sea turtles and a variety of colorful, tropical fish in the waters here.
