Texas is no stranger to things that go bump in the night, but one unexplained phenomenon outshines all the rest in terms of spookiness. Hiding on San Antonio’s Shane’s Road is a “gravity hill,” where cars travel upwards despite being placed in neutral. We wouldn’t typically believe such a thing, but the story behind it is tragically compelling.
Hiding in plain sight on San Antonio’s Shane Road is a phenomenon so mysterious, science has not yet been able to offer a single explanation. Perhaps even eerier than the actual gravity hill is its heartbreaking backstory guaranteed to leave the most diehard skeptics shaking in their boots.

One dark and dreary night, nearly a century ago, a bus full of Catholic schoolchildren was on its way home from a class field trip when it stalled on these very railroad tracks. There was no train approaching, so their teacher simply tried to restart the vehicle.

The blaring horn of a train sounded not even 100 feet from the bus. Its conductor had forgotten to turn on his lights, which explains why the approaching locomotive seemingly appeared out of nowhere.

The teacher made one last-ditch effort to restart the bus to no avail. The speeding train crashed into the bus, nearing splitting it in half due to the immense force. All of the children were killed, but the nun survived. Weeks later, she was so overcome with guilt that she decided to take her own life.

The teacher drove to the railroad tracks and parked directly on them, placing her car in neutral to await a gruesome demise. As a train approached, the soft voices of children outside her vehicle began to grow louder before the car was miraculously pushed out of harm’s way. Tiny handprints were later found covering the bumper.

Today, visitors to the tracks can experience that very same phenomenon of their car rolling uphill and over the tracks to safety. If you’re lucky, childlike handprints may even appear on the car afterward.
