There’s a lot of history here in New Hampshire. But, before you stop reading and go to the next thing that might take your attention let’s remember that not all history is dull! Today’s history lesson comes to us in the form of candy and it couldn’t be any sweeter. This shop is the oldest in the state and that means they’ve perfected the art of the sugar high!

The Granite State Candy Shoppe in Concord has been a part of the community since 1927. But the story begins long before that.

In 1909 Peter Bart came to in Lawrence, Massachusetts from the Greek Island of Lesvos. He began working as a candy maker to learn the trade and eventually made his way to Concord where he eventually opened this wonderful store.

Today the Bart family makes candy in the same tradition of their grandfather. In fact, many of the recipes, techniques and equipment are the same.

The walls are lined with sugar, from hard candies to gummies to chocolates.
