Along with its fascinating history, you can actually spend the night in the original mining cabins located in the town. This allegedly haunted mining camp is not for the faint of heart. The ghost town of Gold Point in Esmeralda County has a pretty unique story. Originally established in 1868, the town was once a thriving silver mining community with more than 100 dwellings and structures.

Unlike many mining towns, Gold Point continued to pump out ore well into the 20th century. It wasn’t until during World War II when the government shut down many mines that the town began to dwindle. The mines officially ceased operations during the 1960s, but the town still stands.

Today, people still inhabit this “living ghost town”. In fact, it’s a pretty popular attraction for ghost town enthusiasts since the town remains very much in tact. It’s almost as if being transported back to the 1880s.

Along the main street you’ll even find a saloon, which will likely be bustling with locals. It’s a pretty good place to learn all about the town from the people who live in it. Don’t forget to partake in a round of shuffleboard or shoot some pool with the townsfolk.

However, if you want the full experience then you absolutely have to rent one of the original miners cabins for an overnight stay. These are the original cabins from the town’s heyday that have been thoughtfully restored over the years.

Each cabin has a unique personality. None of them have running water (although a camp toilet is provided), but you will have access to WiFi and a small TV/VCR combo. That’s all you really need when you’re staying in a history-rich place like this.
