Humans have camped in this expansive, 1600+ acre park for over 12,000 years. The evidence is literally set in stone - depressions in the rock known as bedrock mortars prove the ancient peoples’ existence.

Enchanted Rock officially opened to the public in 1978. Since then, over 400 archaeological sites have been discovered on the grounds. 120 of these are designated State Archaeological Landmarks, and the entire natural area is on the National Register of Historic Places.

It’s called “Enchanted” Rock for a reason. There is much folklore associated with the monolith that dates back to days when Native Americans roamed the land. Although the stories have no scientific backing, we have to wonder how they originated in the first place. That question definitely intrigues us enough to want to visit.

One of the main legends surrounding the rock is that it has magical healing powers. Ancient peoples would climb to the summit, sit down, and meditate in hopes of absorbing some of the energy. Whether that works is questionable, but one thing’s for sure: you’ll definitely feel rejuvenated after a day of hiking here.
