Duncan was first established in 1883, when railroad expansion was at its peak. Like many settlements, it grew until highway construction began redirecting traffic southward and leaving this once-thriving Gila River community to slowly wither away.

Now, it’s a tiny farm town with not more than a handful of operative buildings. Even so, what little activity that remains here evokes a certain Southwestern charm that can’t be found elsewhere.

By far the most noteworthy attraction is the Simpson Hotel. This long-standing Duncan icon has been around for nearly a century, serving as a gateway to the mystical surrounding desert landscape.
