An airport experience can make or break a travel excursion. When you find yourself stuck among long lines, unfriendly service, and poorly maintained facilities, it’s tough to start off your journey on the right foot. A recent study from J.D. Power asked frequent travelers to rate the quality of North American airports in three size categories: mega, large, and medium. In the mega category, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) earned top honors.
Flickr/Ken Lund Detroit’s mega-sized airport finished up the ranking process with 786 out of a possible 1,000 points, trailed closely by Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, which garnered 779 points.
Flickr/Dawn Huczek The Motor City’s primary transportation hub earned high ratings for customer satisfaction based on six standards, which included everything from airport accessibility to ease of security checkpoints to general terminal atmosphere. Mega airports like DTW were classified in the study as those with 33 million or more passengers each year, while large airports were classified as those hosting 10 to 32.9 million.

DTW’s high marks indicate that passengers can expect relatively low wait times for both check-in and end-of-flight services, in addition to well-maintained facilities and a plethora of shops and dining options to explore.

The next time you’re planning a getaway, you might just want to reroute your travels through the Motor City.
Are there any airports in North America that have proven evergreen in their ability to provide fantastic service? Did any of the study’s rankings surprise you? Share your thoughts in the comment section!
