Picking out the best tree for your home is a family tradition in the Cowboy State. Pick out a tree from an overgrown section of the forest and cut it all the way down to leave just a stump, if you want to help out Mother Nature.

Tree cutting permits will cost you between $5 and $10, depending on the forest you choose. Typically, you can take a tree up to 10 or 20 feet in height, and you would be limited to 5 permits per household.

Winter conditions can be rough out here, so come prepared. You’ll need a chainsaw to cut the tree, and it’s best to not go alone into the forest.
