Iowa’s winters are brutally cold, but don’t stay cooped up in the house all season long. There are plenty of fun things to do when the weather is chilly, and if you look around, you’ll find fun festivals and family-friendly events in many of our small towns. For one of the best festivals of the year, head to Clear Lake on Valentine’s Day Weekend.

Every winter, Clear Lake freezes over and hundreds of people gather for the annual Color the Wind Kite Festival, one of the best winter events in the Midwest.

Some of these kites are larger than life! You’ll see gigantic kites like the Blue Whale and characters that take up a big chunk of the sky.

Each year, pilots bring new kites along with crowd favorites. Everyone loves to see the animal kites, like penguins and bears! The colorful traditional kites truly brighten up the sky.
