Landlocked Nebraska seems like an unlikely location for a lighthouse. You’ll find Lake Minatare Recreation Area 12 miles northeast of Scottsbluff. This beautiful area encompasses 2,970 acres.

Standing on the banks of Lake Minatare is a stone lighthouse and pavilion. Although this lighthouse has never been functional, it has been enjoyed by many Nebraskans over the past seven decades.

Visitors can climb up the winding stone staircase to the top of the lighthouse. Be careful on your way up; the stairwell is dark and the steps are a bit steep.

Once at the top, take in the 360-degree views of the lake and surrounding park. It’s a neat place to watch boats cruise across the water.
