By the time fall arrives in South Carolina, most residents are more than ready to embrace cooler temperatures and welcome activities that mean getting outside – and staying there for longer than it takes to walk from the door to the car. Fortunately, harvest season means plenty of festivals and other outdoor fun await those who venture far enough to check it out. Windy Hill Orchard and Cidery may be a bit out of the way for many residents, but a visit here, like their refreshing cider slushies, is worthy of a drive from any part of the state.

If not this weekend, then very soon after, pop in the car and travel approximately five miles west of York for a deliciously fun day trip.

It’s here that you’ll find Windy Hill Orchard and Cidery, specializing in sweet apple goodness pulled right from the trees behind the cidery and turned into heavenly delights. Skip a meal before you come so you’ll have room to try them all while you’re here.

After the drive (whether long or short) start with a refreshing cider slushie.

The kids will especially love this icy, frozen treat, but you’ll want one too. It’s a little like having dessert… before dessert.

Next up, cider donuts and a flight of their famous hard apple ciders.

The market at Windy Hill Orchard sells a variety of apple ciders, including bottles and bottles of the hard variety. You can also pick up gallons and gallons of their regular apple cider to bring home for later.

The fresh apple pies go fast, but get here in time to buy one and you’ll be in pie heaven later when you get home. The market also sells fresh pretzels, fried apple pies (think turnovers), and even fresh pork rinds. And of course, fresh cider donuts!

On certain Fridays throughout the season, you can head into the orchard to pick your own apples and then take a wagon ride. Be sure to check the calendar at this link if you’re bringing the little ones, just to make sure the wagon rides are running and the orchard is opened for pick-your-own apples the day you’re arriving with small children.
